"Cardiovascular Cellular Engineering" Chair

Cardiovascular diseases and heart attacks are the two leading causes of death in Europe. To tackle this issue, École Polytechnique and the AXA Insurance Research Fund set up the permanent "Cardiovascular Cellular Engineering" Chair in 2010 with a budget of €3 million. The Chair was the first to employ a unique transdisciplinary approach—combining biology and engineering—to research into atherosclerosis, a disease of the arteries. The project also aims to attract future engineers to the field of biology. It is directed by Abdul Barakat, professor at the l’X Laboratory of Hydrodynamics (LadHyx) and author of many interdisciplinary studies.
