1972: female students arrive at École Polytechnique

In 1970, École Polytechnique becomes a public institution attached to the Ministry of Defense. This paves the way for female students to join the institution, as they are permitted to take the competitive entry examinations from 1972 onwards. This year also sees a female student, Anne Chopinet, take the top spot in the exam.
