The first Frenchman to win the Wimbledon tournament in 1924 was a former student of l’X. Tennis legend Jean Borotra made his mark on the history of the sport, and was one of the "Four Musketeers", the French team that took home the Davis Cup six years in a row from 1927. While at Polytechnique, Jean Borotra also played soccer and his team won the 1921 France Military Championship. During the Vichy era, he became Commissioner for Youth Affairs and Sports, but was arrested by the Gestapo in 1942 and deported until 1945. Borotra was responsible for creating the International Tennis Club de France and the International Fair Play Committee, and held an honorary position as President of the French Tennis Federation. A year before his death, he was awarded the title of Gloire du sport (Glory of Sport), a prize bestowed to former athletes.
