Magny microscope

This unique piece, designed by the Duke of Chaulnes, is the most beautiful item in École Polytechnique’s collection of antique scientific instruments. This microscope may have once belonged to Louis XV and it was the main attraction of science fairs held by Madame de Pompadour in Versailles. In 1794, the microscope was reclaimed from among the objects confiscated during the Revolution, so that it could be used for practical optics research at l’X. The Magny microscope is on display at the École Polytechnique Museum.
