1914-1918: l’X is transformed into a military hospital

At the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, students are drafted as soldiers, mainly in the Engineering and Artillery regiments. The competitive entry examination and classes are suspended in 1915, and the École Polytechnique building, located on the Montagne Sainte-Geneviève, serves as a military hospital until February 1919, despite a partial reopening of the institution in November 1916.
