The campus of École Polytechnique is brought to life by almost 250 student associations, known as binets in the l’X vernacular. In keeping with the spirit of École Polytechnique—whose name symbolizes the plurality of its educational disciplines—the binets cover all spheres of activity, whether cultural, artistic, social, scientific, religious or sports. To name a few: the DDX association, dedicated to sustainable development; Cheer Up, which supports young people with cancer; X-Broadway, an association dedicated to musical theatre; the Start-up Association, which promotes entrepreneurship; Germanix, the association devoted to German culture, X-Projets, a junior company at l’X; Rhetorix, the public speaking association; the Sign Language association; the culinary association, Sushix… This is just a small sample of the wealth of activities available. The Student Council, known as the Kès, comprises a small group of 16 representatives (called kessiers) who defend student interests and manage associative affairs.
